The Rainforest Alliance is an international nonprofit organization working to build a future in which nature is protected and biodiversity flourishes, where farmers, workers, and communities prosper, and where sustainable land use and responsible business practices are the norm. We envision a world where people and nature thrive in harmony. In January 2018, the Rainforest Alliance merged with UTZ, a global program and label for sustainable farming. For more information, please visit http://www.rainforest-alliance.org/about.
PT Rainforest Alliance is a registered organization in Indonesia, with its main office in Bali. It promotes and supports farmer implementation of the Sustainable Agriculture system for protecting wildlife, ecosystems, worker’s rights, and promoting the well-being of farmers, their families and communities. Farms that meet the rigorous environmental, social and economic criteria are awarded Rainforest Alliance certification. In Indonesia, more than 50,000 farms are certified, producing cocoa, coffee, tea, spices and palm oil.
In 2011, the Rainforest Alliance and local NGO Kalimajari initiated a program to improve incomes for smallholders through the production and certification of high-quality fermented cocoa in Jembrana, Bali. This pilot program has doubled the income of 610 smallholders, attracted 40% women and young farmers and reduced unemployment rates. The SDGP project aims to scale up the pilot initiative to seven other cocoa-producing areas, bringing the Rainforest Alliance, Valrhona (French specialty chocolatier), Yayasan Kalimajari, the District Government of Jembrana and Rikolto together to deliver transformational change and add significant value to the Indonesian cocoa sector.
The five-year project under SDGP project already awarded to RA and consortium aims to improve the livelihoods and wellbeing of Indonesian smallholders and their families by creating value addition through high-quality fermented cocoa beans, greater access to finance and markets, and through creating a transparent, sustainable and efficient fermented cocoa value chain. The project brings together the international and commercial expertise of the specialty chocolate sector, robust experience of international and local NGOs in climate-smart agriculture, sustainable production and community development, and an extensive wider cocoa-industry network that includes national and international (especially European) markets, supported by the government. The project will address interlinked challenges in the entire value chain. It will benefit 13,600 members of 3,400 Indonesian smallholder farming households, including women and youth, farmer groups and cooperatives in seven sites covering 35 villages in Bali, Sulawesi and East Nusa Tenggara.
