BACKGROUND
The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) has a distinguished history of experts exploring and saving wildlife in some of the most remote and wild places remaining on Earth. WCS Indonesia Program (WCS-IP) has significantly grown over the last decades, and contributed substantially in supporting the Government of Indonesia (GoI), particularly Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) in conserving Indonesia's biodiversity. WCS-IP currently has programs focusing on landscape/seascape conservation, species conservation actions and engaging local communities.
POSITION OBJECTIVES
The Technical Officer for the Country Director position's general objective is to support WCS-IP in increasing the effectiveness of its intervention method and scientific quality in and around its focal landscapes in various project implementation sites. Under the general supervision of Country Director, the person will be responsible in supporting the Country Director in the fulfillment and execution of duties, both to ensure the efficient management of WCS-IP and liaise effectively with all WCS-IP partners: GoI, national organizations/institutions, program offices and associates, as well as external partners and contacts. The person will also assist in WCS-IP technical reports quality in general whenever needed.
The person will be responsible in establishing molecular methods, conducting molecular genetics laboratory work, providing necessary and relevant related to molecular genetics data under the general supervision of Country Director, Conservation Genetics Specialist and Science Unit Coordinator. The person will also assist WCS-IP in writing scientific papers, technical reports on genetic projects, and support other relevant activities within the Science Unit.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
General Tasks
- Provide support to Country Director and Senior Managers during WCS-IP meetings, conferences on specific subjects, coordinates and prepares all relevant scientific data for presentations, speeches, publication documents, briefing packs, etc.
- Assist the Country Director in writing and publishing scientific research findings and outputs that relate to the implementation of WCS-IP program, in close coordination with relevant Program Managers and Officers, including assisting in reviewing and editing scientific papers and technical reports, research papers, progress reports, evaluation reports, briefings and presentations.
- Answer and screen inquiries and correspondence in an appropriate manner, based on familiarity with subject matter, and refer others to appropriate staff member or department
- Assist WCS-IP senior management, Country Director in particular, in their leadership functions, i.e. networking with GoI, other institutions and wider conservation community and relevant stakeholders.
Support to WCS-IP Genetic Research
- Provide key support (including critical thinking) into the implementation of WCS-IP genetic research, including for the Terrestrial, Marine, and WTP programs as needed.
- Make an independent decision or suggestion to the use of research techniques and methods when undertaking molecular wildlife genetics research.
- Contribute to discussion on solving a problem related to the molecular laboratory work.
- Carry out literature study on ongoing and future wildlife genetic research project.
- Continue to update knowledge and develop skills, either theoretical, practical, molecular, or analytical software skills.
- Assist the Conservation Genetics Specialist in conducting lab works needed for genetic projects, including conducting molecular genetic laboratory work for wildlife genetics, e.g., mitochondrial genetic diversity, sex determination, and SNP/microsatellite genotyping.
- Liaison and networking
- Attend and participate in relevant meetings.
- Liaise with other researchers for networking and possible collaboration, such as in the National Wildlife Genetic Consortium, and the Wallacea project.
- Support conducting capacity building activities, internally or externally, such as genetics workshop for GoI, universities, or other research institutes as needed.
- Research findings communication, by writing scientific papers, technical reports, and progress reports to communicate research findings, whether for internal use (e.g., WCS-IP website content), GoI or to other partners (e.g. universities, other research institutions).
Other
- Assist WCS-IP technical reports writing (and other campaign, reading materials, etc.) in general whenever requested.
- Undertake other tasks as deemed necessary in line with the goal of providing management support as assigned by Country Director.
REQUIREMENTS
This position will be based in Bogor with frequent travels to Depok. There are possibilities to travel to other WCS's working site as well. The ideal candidate will have:
- At least one year of experience in applied genetics research and or minimum of one year experience as a research officer.
- Graduated from biology or related undergraduate degree major.
- Knowledge and/or experience in administration work is preferable.
- An ability to communicate with board range of people and finding solutions of problems.
- Good interpersonal skills to deal with a diverse group of contacts (including government partners and other colleagues), and ability to be a team player.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both Indonesian and English.
- Aptitude in the use of a MS spreadsheet, words, and presentation. Ability to use R software and skilfull in preparing well-designed presentations would be an advantage.
