The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) has a distinguished history of experts exploring and saving wildlife in some of the most remote and wild places remaining on Earth. Wildlife Conservation Society Indonesia Program (WCS-IP) has significantly grown over the last decades, and contributed substantially in supporting the Government of Indonesia (GoI), particularly Ministry of Environment and Forestry (MoEF) in conserving Indonesia's biodiversity. WCS-IP currently has programs focusing on landscape/seascape conservation, species conservation actions and engaging local communities.

WCS-IP's approach is defined by the five core WCS Global components of Protect, Discover, Inspire and Leverage, and Build. This structure was developed as part of WCS 2020 to reflect the importance of combining scientific research with broader public awareness and engagement with decision makers. The basis of all of our work is to provide scientific data to the Government of Indonesia.

The WCS-IP Conservation Science Specialist will be responsible for supporting these efforts through:

  • Building research capacity within WCS-IP and the broader conservation community, through facilitating training, capacity-building events, providing advice and technical support for various research activities, and assisting in the preparation of scientific publications and technical reports;
  • Leading to the implementation of the WCS-IP-MoEF Research Fellowship Program; and,
  • Contributing to the development of a national biodiversity conservation research hub.

The position will be based in Bogor with regular trips to the field as required and in consultation/coordination with the respective senior program manager/program manager/landscape manager to provide direct technical advice and monitoring to field projects. The Conservation Science Specialist will work under the general supervision of the Science Unit Coordinator of WCS-IP as well as work closely together with other colleagues in the Science Unit as a team.

SPECIFIC TASKS

Research support

  • Provide technical support to the Forest Program, particularly for the development and implementation of research roadmaps in field sites/technical units (UPTs) where WCS-IP work, and to the sustainable landscape program as needed.
  • Provide technical support and contribute to the development of study/research designs such as responding to One Health issue (including ASF and zoonotic issues) for the WTP program.
  • Provide data analysis support to the various WCS IP programs, as requested, and contribute to scientific paper writing and other publications as required.
  • Provide technical support for the collaboration between WCS-IP and Donor, particularly in the initiation of the biodiversity conservation research hub.
  • Working together with the Communications Unit and other related programs in developing WCS-IP's strategy in engaging youth through the development of a behavior change campaign.
  • Provide support for the implementation of the use of conservation evidence to measure conservation impact in various programs in WCS-IP.

Training and capacity building

  • Facilitate beginner-intermediate data analysis training course based on a needs assessment of WCS-IP staff, university students and MoEF partners, in collaboration with other WCS-IP research staff, and other relevant partners.
  • Assist in overseeing the operation of a Stats Helpdesk for WCS-IP and assist Science Lunch Talks as needed.

Communicating conservation science

  • Undertake presentations in selected partner Indonesian universities to raise students' interest to study wildlife (e.g. through regular presentations on WCS-IP biodiversity conservation work and research topic opportunities).
  • Provide critical thinking in WCS-IP technical reports and publications, including maps, graphs, and infographics, as requested.

Project management

  • Coordinate the running of WCS-IP Research Fellowship Program second batch (2022-2023).

GENERAL TASKS

  • Liaise and establish good working relationships and/or strategic partnerships with key stakeholders such as MoEF, academia, NGOs, private sector, donors and others to ensure the successful coordination, implementation and follow-up of project activities as well as the mobilization of additional resources to the projects.
  • Provide technical and facilitating support to meetings, seminars, workshops and public outreach activities as required and formally represent WCS-IP as necessary in such meetings, workshops and conferences.
  • Support national-level policy activities to enhance the profile of effectively managed protected areas, as a key mechanism for effective species conservation in Indonesia.
  • Undertake any other duties as assigned by the Country Director, Deputy Director, and Science Unit Coordinator.

REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate should have the following qualities and skills:

  • At least one year of experience working on wildlife conservation.
  • Graduated from biology or related field with masters' degree major.
  • An ability to communicate with board range of people and finding solutions of problems.
  • Good interpersonal skills to deal with a diverse group of contacts (including Government partners and other colleagues), and good ability to work in a team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both Indonesian and English.
  • Have experience with international journal publication, preferable to have at least one publication as the first author.
  • Capable in the use of relevant analytical tools, such as GIS software and R software. An ideal applicant should be capable in thinking through the statistical approaches required to solve data analysis queries.
  • Able to prepare well-designed presentations would be an advantage.
  • Uphold the basic principles of science: integrity of knowledge, collegiality, honesty, objectivity, and openness.
