Community Liaison

 

The United States Peace Corps program in Indonesia has currently opened recruitment for qualified and motivated candidates for a position with its Pre-Service Training (PST) program with the following details:

Location

Duty station is Surabaya, East Java, Indonesia. Required to live in Mojosari for the duration of Pre-Service Training.

Peace Corps Indonesia is a U.S. government agency partnering with the Government of Indonesia in the areas of technical cooperation and cultural understanding between the two countries.

 

Peace Corps brings volunteers from the United States to work at Indonesian schools to assist in the development of English language teaching and learning.

 

The first step of the training cycle that volunteers complete is a 11-to-12-week intensive training period called Pre-Service Training (PST). While the Peace Corps office is located in Surabaya, the Peace Corps training will be conducted in Mojosari, Mojokerto, East Java.

 

A Community-Based Training approach is used for Peace Corps Trainees (PCTs) in which they stay with individual host families for the duration of training, visit local schools, and work with Language Facilitators (LFs) on lessons that draw from daily experiences in the village and prepare them for new ones.

 

For this position, Peace Corps cannot provide any assistance with relocation to the area, temporary housing, or with costs for coming to Surabaya for an interview, or to the PST site for work. Due to U.S. government regulations, the selected candidate will have to submit an original Police Certificate (SKCK) and have a security background check before being able to start working with Peace Corps.

 

Statement Of Work – Community Liaison (CL):

 

General Description

Under the supervision of the Peace Corps Training Manager (TM) and in coordination with other Training Team members – Language and Cross Cultural Coordinator (LCC), Training Assistant (TA), Homestay Coordinator (HC) and General Services, Technician and Driver (GSTD) – the Community Liaison is mainly responsible for liaising between Peace Corps Indonesia staff and Mojosari stakeholders in Leminggir village, Seduri village and Mojosari sub-district to make sure the village is prepared in hosting Peace Corps Trainees and Volunteers.

 

Peace Corps Indonesia provides several weeks of orientation and training to prepare new staff members for their roles in the organization.

 

Summary of Responsibilities

Administrative and Logistics Support

§  Coordinates with Mojosari stakeholders in Leminggir village, Seduri village and Mojosari sub-district to provide logistical support to Peace Corps staff, ensuring all training logistics at the training site are in place before and during PST.

§  Creates maps of all locations (villages, host families, classrooms, and practicum schools) for transportation, training and safety purposes.

§  Coordinates with the TA to prepare all training-related needs at the PST site, which includes the training venue and interview venue preparation.

§  In coordination with the LCC, identifies conducive classrooms for daily language classes, and ensures the rooms are fully available as needed by PCTs and Language Facilitators (LFs).

§  In coordination with the LCC, identifies resources and/or venues that can support PCTs' language and cultural learning, and/or enhance PCTs' work performance as well as planning on cultural discussions and cultural activities.

§  In coordination with the TA and GSTDs, identifies public transportation and maps the cost in the relevant areas.

§  Assists the TA in gathering teaching schedules from schools and helps organize practicum activities that include: English Camp, Model School and School Practicum, including sending letters to schools and communicating with principals and English teachers.

§  Ensures that language classes are fully set and equipped at least a few days prior to the start of classes.

§  Assists the TA and GSTDs in arranging rental vehicles for PCTs.

§  Assists the TA in distributing contributions to host families (HFs).

§  Assists the TA in sending invitations for the Swearing-in Ceremony.

§  Manages all files and documents in an organized manner, as well as submitting regular reports to the TM.

 

Communication and Public Relations Support

§  Maintains appropriate contacts with Mojosari, Leminggir and Seduri officials, which includes arranging coordination meetings with the local authorities and officials as needed.

§  In coordination with the TA, establishes relationships and maintains communication with schools at the PST training site in order to provide teaching practicum experiences to PCTs.

§  In coordination with HC, helps arrange housing checks and identifies host family candidates within Leminggir village who meet the housing criteria provided by Peace Corps Indonesia in regards to location, facilities, interests in hosting an American, and opportunities for exposure to Indonesian language and culture.

§  In coordination with the HC, follows up with selected host families to ensure the houses are ready for Trainees and gathers necessary documents from the host families as needed.

§  Assists the HC in regular communication with HFs.

§  Assists the TM to arrange coordination meetings with village authorities and officials as needed.

 

 

 

Event Support

§  In coordination with the HC, helps organize Host Family (HF) Orientation, including sending invitation letters to potential HFs and village leaders.

§  In coordination with the TA, helps organize Teacher Orientation for School Practicum, including sending letters to schools.

§  Assists the LCC in organizing cultural activities.

 

Others

§  Actively promotes Peace Corps mission in the Mojosari area.

§  Serves as a proactive resource for Peace Corps staff regarding the villages in Mojosari sub-district and their culture.

§  Participates in General Training of Trainers (ToT); full attendance is mandatory.

§  Attends regular meetings with the TM and other Training Team members.

§  Is consistent and assertive in enhancing PC policies and procedures.

§  Observes a professional code of ethics in regard to Volunteers/Trainees, staff and the community.

§  Observes the limits of confidentiality with Volunteers/Trainees and Peace Corps staff.

§  Performs other duties as assigned according to Peace Corps Indonesia's needs.

 

 

QualificationS

Minimum Requirements:

At a minimum, the successful candidate's CV must demonstrate the following:

§  University/college degree required.

§  Minimum 2 years' experience working in a cross-cultural setting.

§  Ability to take initiative, meets deadlines, and works with minimal supervision.

§  Ability to manage various tasks in organizing events.

§  Very familiar with the Mojosari area (particularly Leminggir and Seduri villages), transportation and leadership.

§  Oral and written fluency in Indonesian language required. Ability to communicate using Basic English is preferable.

§  Attention to detail.

§  Ability to use computers and Microsoft Office suite.

§  Ability to act with diplomacy and tact with staff, community members and government officials.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

§  Knowledge of Javanese preferred.

§  Experience navigating village bureaucracy preferred.

§  Knowledge of community development.
