Background
The ASEAN Youth Forum (AYF) is a regional movement that represents and advocates for young people's
human rights and freedoms in ASEAN. AYF has been a platform for the youth in ASEAN to raise their voice
and claim their rights for a sustainable, inclusive, people-centred, and youth-driven regional community.
The network aims to institutionalise and establish its national chapters to focus the engagement on
significant and timely local issues affecting Southeast Asian youth and consolidate policy proposals and
agendas to put forward to the relevant ASEAN offices.
2023 is a year full of challenges as well as opportunities for ASEAN. Entering the phase of post-COVID-19,
ASEAN still has many problems affecting the lives of young people. The issue of climate justice, the
humanitarian crisis in Myanmar, and youth welfare are still haunting. Beyond that, Indonesia, a country
where the ASEAN Secretariat and bodies have offices, is the chairperson of the ASEAN Summit this year. By
carrying out the theme of ASEAN Matters: Epicentrum of Growth, the Indonesian government has an
immense opportunity to address issues at the regional level.
In response to this, AYF Secretariat has designed advocacy steps for young people in ASEAN to pursue the
fulfillment of human rights and the enjoyment of high quality of life for young people in the region. In doing
their work, AYF Secretariat needs young people whose concerns and interests are similar to AYF Seretariat's:
human rights in Southeast Asia in the region. AYF Secretariat needs you to play a significant role as our
Advocacy Officer (12 months contract, Jakarta-based, and full-time work).
Role and Responsibilities
Below is the list of roles and responsibilities embodied by the Advocacy Officer:
● Together with the Advocacy Manager representing the AYF Secretariat in advocacy activities or
work in the coalition or meeting with stakeholders
● Assist the Advocacy Manager in implementing advocacy strategies and steps
● Carrying out program implementation under the direction of advocacy work
● Doing administrative matters needed during the implementation of advocacy work
● Together with the Advocacy Manager to do reporting, monitoring, and evaluation
● Coordinate with external or internal parties regarding advocacy work
● Actively involved in writing articles, policy briefs, and other advocacy tools
Qualification
An Advocacy Officer is expected to have several criteria. They are:
● Young people max 35 years old
● Uphold the values and principles of human rights, non-discrimination and equity
● Have two to three years of experience in the field of advocacy or human rights
● Have good interpersonal communication skills
● Be able to work individually, team, or coalition
● Have a good skills in writing and public speaking
● Detail oriented, strategic, and a problem solver
● Have proficiency in English (speaking and writing)
