One of the great and still evolving nutritional success stories is the progress made by Indonesia towards eliminating vitamin A deficiency. Two decades ago, the problem was serious, children in Indonesia had high levels of vitamin A deficiency, which can cause blindness and damage the immune system, greatly increasing the risk of illness and death.
The Government of Indonesia (GoI) along with other partners, tackled the problem through the Bi-annual rounds of distribution of high-dose vitamin A capsules among the children aged 6-59 months, reducing the mortality and morbidity associated with vitamin A deficiency.
Analysis of the survey conducted by RISKESDAS showed that coverage of Vitamin A supplementation increased from 71% in 2007 to 75% in 2013. Although the coverage increased, many children are still being missed from getting the vitamin A dose. Moreover, as GoI has shifted its focus, the VAS program needs to be strengthened and advocated to be included as an indicator for MCH programs.
Nutrition International (NI; formerly Micronutrient Initiative) has supported VAS programming in Indonesia since 2009 in 12 districts of six provinces. These provinces are North Sumatera, South Sumatera, West Nusa Tenggara, Banten, West Java and Riau.
The objective of this consultancy is to conduct a PECS following the February 2024 VAS round in West Java and West Nusa Tenggara provinces of Indonesia. The PECS will validate administrative coverage data collected during the round and assess the quality of the implementation of the round.
