Head of Agriculture Science
Edufarmers Foundation is a non-profit organization with a mission to empower Indonesian smallholder farmers to build a sustainable, productive, and climate-resilient agricultural sector. Since 2015, Edufarmers Foundation has been working with thousands of farmers and youths across multiple provinces and commodities in Indonesia. This year, we are stepping up our effort and aiming to train and empower > 20,000 farmers.
Agronomy is our core competency that we want to keep building for us to be able to deliver our mission effectively. With regards to agriculture science, there are 3 main objectives that we want to achieve:
- Agriculture Production Research: Lead the research team to do iterations on farming SOP to be the best-in-class in Indonesia – able to achieve higher yield compared to farmers with same amount of cost.
- Product Testing Research: Lead the product testing team to compare product efficacy, perform technical development on agri-input products (seeds, fertilizers, agro-chemicals), and potentially help registering the product to Ministry of Agriculture.
- Agronomic Knowledge Management: Setup a structured system of agronomic knowledge management for us to keep building our knowledge on top of previous cases and experiences, including building system that enable us to leverage external expertise in global universities and private sectors.
We are currently looking for Head of Agriculture Science to lead the achievement of these 3 main objectives. Through your contribution, you will be able to join our journey to truly create and own a legacy that have a big potential to change agriculture sector in Indonesia, that can deliver real impact to farmers at scale.

As a Head of Agriculture Science, you will mainly work on the main objectives mentioned above. Details of the jobs will include, but not limited to:
- Agriculture Production and Product Testing Research
- Build the systems and processes for agriculture production and product testing research, incl. Experiment design system, data collection system, research operations system.
- Decide on the research and product testing roadmap, including the experiment design.
- Monitor the research implementation process.
- Analyze the results of the research.
- Provide reports to management on the research implementation process and result and help management to make decisions based on the statistical result.
- Build and lead the Research team to achieve the objectives, including building their capabilities.
- Agronomic Knowledge Management
- Build the systems and processes for us to keep building our agronomic knowledge based on cases and experiences from every research, farming project and issue that happened.
- Build a global expert network that we can tap into for additional agronomic expertise.
- Create and compile farming SOP and agronomic content to be used by relevant team.
- Build and lead the Knowledge team to achieve the objectives, including building their capabilities.
Requirements and Qualifications
- Educational background related to Agriculture Science.
- Minimum 10 years of experience as Research & Development Manager or similar role with experience in leading a team of agriculture researchers.
- Preferably from national or multinational agri-input principals or estate farming companies.
- Experience of working in an academic environment is a plus.
- Experience in food crops (rice, maize) and horticulture crops (chili, potato) production.
- Strong leadership and decision-making ability for operational issues.
- Strong orientation to data and details.
- Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills, have the ability to make a cohesive connection and solution out of available scattered information.
- Comfortable with ambiguity and able to cope with sudden changes in requirements.
- Love working on challenges and solving them together with the team.
- Have a strong can-do attitude to find a way to solve problems.
- Ability to work independently and resourcefully with minimal supervision.
- Ability to adapt to frequent change and fast-paced environment.
- Strong written and spoken communication and presentation skills (English and Indonesian).
- Ability to perform data analysis using statistical programs (SPSS, STAT, Minitab, Stata, R, etc.)
