Language and Cultural Facilitator

 

Position Title: Short-term Language and Cultural Facilitator

Opening Date: 25 March 2025

Salary (per annum): Total compensation for 12 weeks of service starting at IDR 29,454,908 (+ benefits), negotiable based on salary history and experience.

Period of Performance/ Length of Contract/ Work Schedule: The anticipated contract will be for a short-term contract from 10 - 16 August 2025 and 28 September – 13 December 2025, requiring a minimum working schedule of 40 hours per week.

Place of Performance: Leminggir, Mojosari, Mojokerto, with some travel.

Security Level required: Local Security Certificate

Background information of the position

The mission of Peace Corps worldwide is to promote peace and friendship. Peace Corps was invited to Indonesia in 2010 and has since welcomed. Hundreds of Peace Corps Volunteers who have worked as teachers in Indonesia since then. The work of a Peace Corps Personal Services Contractor (PSC) does not limit itself to the role: it also includes active support of the Peace Corps mission which is paramount to the job because as contractors are also representatives of Peace Corps in Indonesia.

The first step of the training cycle that volunteers complete is a 11-to-12-week intensive training period called Pre-Service Training (PST). While the Peace Corps office is located in Surabaya, the Peace Corps training will be conducted in Leminggir, Mojosari, Mojokerto, East Java.

A Community-Based Training approach is used for Peace Corps Trainees (PCTs) in which they stay with individual host families for the duration of training, visit local schools, and work with Language Facilitators (LFs) on lessons that draw from daily experiences in the village and prepare them for new ones.

For this position, Peace Corps cannot provide any assistance with relocation to the area, temporary housing, or with costs for coming to Surabaya for the final interview, or to the PST site for work. Per U.S. government regulations, the selected candidate will be required to submit an original Police Certificate (SKCK) and have a security background check before being able to start working with Peace Corps.

 

Tasks & Deliverables

 

Language Training

· Participate in the Training of Trainer (TOT) and in the Language Training of Trainer (LTOT) workshops, date to be confirmed, where facilitator will be introduced to Peace Corps' mission, Peace Corps training approaches, and methods. Full attendance of the TOT and LTOT is mandatory.

·         Facilitate the language and cultural session during PST within planned scheme of work.

·         Identify PCTs' areas of success and challenges.

·         Offer suggestions for additional assistance to the PCTs experiencing difficulty.

·         Ensure usage of adult-learning principles and communicative methods.

·         Prepare all necessary materials, visuals, activities, and work sheets in coordination with the LCC.

·         Make appropriate changes/adaptations to the topics, lesson plans, learning activities and tasks according to Trainee learning styles and their feedback.

·         Ensure that all PCTs complete all scheduled language and cultural activities.

·         Encourage PCTs maximum use of Bahasa Indonesia during PST.

·         Is accessible to PCTs outside of scheduled sessions to provide conversational assistance and/or cultural information/suggestions/insights.

·         Report any PCTs' absence, lateness, or problems, which may arise in class to the LCC and Training Manager.

·         Evaluate the success of the lesson, documents comments, ideas and suggestions to assist with future implementation.

·         Submit all lesson plans and language materials to the LCC.

 

Intercultural Competencies Training

·         Serve as a cultural information resource for PCTs.

·         Plan and facilitate cultural sessions/activities with PCTs.

·         Able to create a positive classroom culture; understand and respect the values and traditions of the diverse cultures represented in his or her classroom.

 

Trainee Support

·         Document Trainees' behavior and inform LCC and TM about Trainees' behavior.

·         Provide feedback related to PCTs' performance during PST.

 

Others

·         Provide administrative and logistical support to the training team.

·         Performs other duties as assigned according to Peace Corps Indonesia's needs.

 

QualificationS

Minimum Requirements:

At a minimum, the successful candidate's CV must demonstrate the following:

  • University/college degree.
  • 2 years of work experience including 1 year experience in teaching language(s).
  • Oral and written fluency in English and Indonesian language.
  • Knowledge of any local language and culture in Indonesia.
  • Ability to use computer and Microsoft Office suite.
  • Ability to design, implement and evaluate language training materials.
  • Knowledge on adult learning principles and how to provide constructive feedback.
  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to act as a member of a team, establish and maintain positive relationships with other team members.
