NLR, is a professional organization working in the field of leprosy and disability in 16 leprosy endemic countries. Each year, around 219.000 people globally are diagnosed with leprosy. Indonesia ranks number 3, with relatively high disability rates. NLR, with its International Office in Amsterdam, has been supporting projects in Indonesia since 1967. The main partner of NLR is the Ministry of Health (MoH) and activities are aligned to MoH policies and priorities.
NLR is developing a multi-country study aiming to show that breaking the chain of transmission of M. leprae is possible, evidenced by a dramatic reduction in incidence. The Expert Meeting advised on combinations of available drugs, with known efficacy against leprosy, as well as on the duration of the intake, aiming at a risk reduction of 80–90%, and then, so called PEP++ regimen for the intervention study. The ++ here does not only refer to the combination of available drugs but also elucidates all component activities of PEP++ project as a whole what we call an enhanced ‘package’ of leprosy control. This enhanced ‘package’ focuses to research on improving strategies for early detection in leprosy and improving the knowledge and perceptions of leprosy in the communities conducted by a PhD student in each country. Multi-countries involved in this PEP++ research project are India, Brazil and Indonesia in which the research topic has been determined to support PEP++ demonstration project in every country.
