Background

Women's Voice and Leadership (We Lead) is a multi-year project initiated by Hivos Southeast Asia and Just Associates (JASS) and funded by Global Affairs Canada (GAC), starting from 2019 until 2023. To implement the project, Hivos and JASS collaborate with five (5) women's rights organizations (5 WROs) with strong legitimacy among their constituencies and the broader community: Rahima, Fahmina, Rumah KitaB, Perempuan Mahardhika, and FAMM Indonesia. The project aims to improve the enjoyment of human rights by women and girls and advance gender equality in Indonesia.

In the 2nd year of the project, the Covid-19 pandemic hit Indonesia. This changed our lives in many ways; working and communicating and shifting our focus on the safety and security of ourselves, colleagues, and families. In responding to this situation, We Lead supported local women's organizations, and community (LWO/Cs) members called the rapid response grant. This is a small grant that supports the initiative of the LWO/Cs to defend their economic generating to continue their livelihood. Various initiatives emerged and grew, such as collective organic farming, the production of snacks, herbal drinks, virgin coconut oil, catfish farming, and distributing staple food packages for LBT communities.

Despite the challenges faced by the women in the local community/organizations, there were many meaningful experiences, knowledge and best practice of the initiatives that could be documented and used as a source of knowledge and lesson learnt that is so powerful for further developing similar initiatives in the future.
