has an opening for an

 

IHL/Legal Intern
(on-site, based in Jakarta)


 

Role Purpose

Under the supervision of the Head of Legal Department/Legal Adviser, the Intern supports the IHL/Legal Department in the ICRC Regional Delegation for International Humanitarian Law (IHL) implementation, integration, and promotion measures that are carried out in the contexts wherein the ICRC Regional Delegation is working. It is expected that the IHL/Legal Internship Program will provide mutual benefits to the Intern and the ICRC alike. The Intern will be able to learn from and have experience with the ICRC, particularly on IHL-related works. The Intern also has an opportunity to disseminate the ICRC's works more broadly in academia and the State authorities. In addition to these general assignments, the Intern may also be assigned with a specific project during their internship duration. Such project may take form in various examples as reviewing relevant domestic legislation against IHL principles or conducting research on a specific thematic IHL topic, support to the "Nilai Kemanusiaan" Program, and others.

 

Responsibilities

  1. Supports the IHL/Legal Department in the ICRC Regional Delegation for IHL implementation, integration, and promotion measures, including but not limited to:
    • Under the guidance and direct supervision of the Legal Adviser, provides assistance in conducting research and analysis on international humanitarian law (IHL) and/or other relevant legal regimes vis-à-vis the Indonesian context.
    • Provides assistance to the IHL Unit in dissemination and promotion of IHL to the authorities, academic circles, and the general public.
    • Collecting the necessary information and materials for the Updating Customary IHL Database Project.
    • Supports the translation work and proofreading for IHL-related materials.
    • Support the implementation of any specific project(s) in the Delegation.
  2. Provides contribution to the delegation's communication platform on updates regarding IHL issues when necessary.Contributes at least one (1) article on IHL-related issues to the Regional Delegation's blog during the internship period. Details on this particular task will be discussed with his/her Supervisor in the briefing period.
  3. Understands the composition, roles, and functions of the different members of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.
  4. Keeping abreast of the development in Indonesia and Timor-Leste on the matters related to IHL and other legal-related issues (e.g. use of force, new weapons, counter-terror, migration, etc) through web-based research, attending external seminars/events, or other relevant means.
  5. Applies the ICRC's Code of Conduct and Security Rules at all times.
  6. Subject to approval of his/her direct supervisor and for the purpose of exposure, the Intern may also support other units in the Delegation when necessary.
  7. Performs other tasks and duties when necessary.

 

Requirements
  • Strong motivation for humanitarian work.
  • Fresh graduates with a maximum of 1-year professional experience from law and/or political science faculties (undergraduate or graduate level), or final-year university students from the same faculties who have completed most of their mandatory courses.
  • Able to commit to a full-time internship program based in Jakarta.
  • Strong analytical and good research skills.
  • Excellent knowledge on public international law, international humanitarian law, human rights law, and other relevant fields of international law. Familiarity with the Indonesian legal system is essential.
  • Knowledge and experience in IHL-related matters would be appreciated.
  • Fluent in Indonesian with a good command of English, particularly for written reports. Good command in Portuguese/Tetum is an advantage.
  • Experience within the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is an asset, but not a must.
  • Experience in student organizations is a plus.

Duration of Internship Program
The Internship Program is arranged to last for three (3) months, extendable for up to six (6) months.
 

Allowance/Remuneration
This is a paid internship. The ICRC will provide, based on its standard, a monthly remuneration for the Intern during their internship program. Unfortunately, the ICRC is not in the position to provide a relocation allowance for the selected candidate.
