As we are constantly expanding, we are currently hiring to fill the following position for our office in Jakarta:

 

Marine Ecology Specialist

(Code: MES)

 

 

The Blue Halo S that links effective marine ecosystem protection with sustainable production, and development of ocean resources (including mangrove and seagrass for blue carbon) and seeks to support advancements of these objectives through the mobilization of funding for critical science and data, sustainable management of critical ecosystems, support to small scale fishers and communities and to increase resilience of these marine areas. As the Blue Halo S was officially announced by the Coordinating Minister of Maritime and Investment Affairs (CMMIA), Ministry of Marine and Fisheries (MMF), Green Climate Fund (GCF), CI, and KI in the G20 side event in Nusa Dua, Bali, Blue Halo S has now entered the Project Preparation Facility (PPF) stage.

The Marine Ecology Specialist would be a part of the Blue Halo S science team that provides technical, scientific, and analytical advice on research collaborations and projects related to the initiative. The topic may include, but is not limited to marine protected area design, ocean health, and climate change impacts on the marine ecosystem. Project and technical support duties include desktop research, ideating and co-creating research or grant proposals, developing data collection methodologies, critically reviewing research proposals, government engagement, advising field work, and helping expand the Blue Halo S science pillar overall. The candidate must have strong analytical and writing skills. The ability to communicate science effectively is a bonus. This position does not supervise staff and will report to the Senior Oceans Program Lead. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

       Provide advice to the team on ocean climate, ocean health, and MPA design and establishment, elaborate various development planning tools, collect information on socio-economic aspects of ocean management. 

       Advice KI regional (field) team on implementation of the project activities on ocean climate, ocean health, and MPA design and management, and marine biology.

       Support the implementation of activities on Blue Halo S.

       Participate in field missions to assist in the formulation, monitoring, and review of field project.;

       Serve as technical contact with collaborating agencies/institutions and participate in their meetings.

       Prepare reports, grant proposals, scientific papers, scientific briefs, and developing materials for internal decision-makers and external parties.

       Ensure consistency with KI's intellectual property rights prior to publication and/or release of data.

       Identify research topics, data collection methods, and the most effective technology to answer research questions.

       Identify external research collaborators.

       Support marine programs in program and project development.

       Work closely with key internal and external partners to disseminate updates and information regarding the Blue Halo S Science Pillar.

 

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

·       Contribute to organizing technical meetings, workshops, and training courses on Blue Halo S related topics.

·       Assist in identifying and developing tools and resources that help build capacity and advance KI's policy, science, and program development agenda.

·       Maintain project files and related databases. Secure information and data with appropriate back-up procedures.

·       Perform related duties as assigned.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

·       Advanced University Degree in fisheries science, marine ecology, or related discipline applicable to designing and siting MPAs or creating climate adaptive marine resource management.

·       Five years of relevant experience, including fieldwork on various aspects of marine ecology, marine biology, or MPA development.

·       Highly organized and ability to work well under pressure.

·       Ability to work in a team environment, communicate updates to team members, and work cooperatively with internal and external partners.

·       Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Bahasa Indonesia.

·       Strong statistical, coding, or modelling skills.

·       Demonstrated problem-solving skills.

·       Proficient in Microsoft Office 365.

 

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

·       Proven research experience, with peer-reviewed publications or grey literature co-authorship; 

·       Candidates must be ready to come with bold research ideas;

·       Having experience working in an interdisciplinary research project;

·       Excellent interpersonal, science communication, presentation, and management skills;

·       Dependable, enthusiastic, versatile, and responsible;

·       Collaborative, yet decisive, and able to work independently;

·       Strong work ethic, organizational, financial, and time management skills;

Effective relationship builder exercising tact, sensitivity, and discretion at all times

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

       Work is performed in a typical office environment which requires visits to project sites and other locations.

       Willingness to work flexible hours to support conferences and meetings in different time zones.
