[newdevjobsindo] WRI Indonesia is looking for Consultant as Decarbonization Tools Developer

Program Overview
World Resources Institute (WRI) is an independent national research organization that turns big ideas into action at the nexus of environment, economic opportunity, and human well-being. WRI Indonesia is affiliated with World Resources Institute (WRI), a global environmental research organization that works with various stakeholders to support policies and practices that are sustainable and profitable. WRI works with leaders in more than 50 countries for more than 30 years, with offices in Brazil, China, Europe, Africa, India, Indonesia, Mexico, and the United States.

Launched in early 2014, WRI Indonesia builds on WRI's 20-year history in the country and the official establishment of WRI Indonesia office has strengthened our impacts on the ground in recent years. Our current work primarily focuses on forest and land-use. Over time WRI Indonesia aims to expand its portfolio to include climate, energy, and city and transportation. Therefore, it is important for the organization to identify and put in place the research building blocks for achieving the vision of WRI Indonesia supporting science- and data-driven decision making at national and sub-national level.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2021 report provides a new estimate of the likelihood of passing the global warming rate of 1.5°C in the coming decades. The report also underscores that limiting warming to below 1.5°C or even 2°C would be out of reach unless there is a rapid and large-scale reduction of direct GHG emissions. In response to this, in 2022, Indonesia has updated a more ambitious target in reducing emissions through the Enhanced Nationally Determined Contribution (Enhanced NDC) document. The reduction target with their own efforts was increased from 29% to 31.89% and the reduction target with international assistance was increased from 41% to 43.20%. Indonesia itself is one of the emission-intensive producing countries along with Bangladesh, China, India, Pakistan, South Africa, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine and Vietnam (McKinsey, 2022). These countries derive a sizable share of their GDP, averaging around 18%, from highly impactful sectors such as high emission manufacturing, fossil fuel-based power and agriculture. Countries like Indonesia can transition to a low-carbon economy primarily by decarbonizing industrial processes and expanding the range of renewable energy sources.

This shows the important role of the private sector and industry in the transition towards a net-zero economy. Along with the many campaigns about the climate crisis and encouragement from the public and also the market, more and more companies are starting to implement their emission reduction strategies. Based on the Science-Based Target Initiative (SBTI), more than 4,300 companies have taken steps to mitigate the impact of climate change. But only half have targets based on science. Adopting a globally recognized, science-appropriate climate ambition targeting framework is critical for companies to have a real impact on their actions. In addition, this can increase public confidence in the commitments made by companies in taking steps to mitigate the climate crisis.

Since last year, World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia has been supporting the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce (KADIN) to support the Industrial Net Zero Strategy by establishing the KADIN Net Zero Hub (NZH). This NZH has attract various companies to start their net zero journey, by starting their GHG emission inventory and committing to the SBTi. While the interest of companies on net zero has substantially increase, the access of knowledge strategy of decarbonization for the companies is still limited, complicated, and costly. Thus, making their movement towards the net zero are hampered and increase the risk of fail when reach the validation of their net zero target. Realizing this, WRI Indonesia develop the decarbonization tools that can be access by various companies. By developing this tools, WRI Indonesia aims to provide various companies an easy, accessible, and comprehensive tool that can be used for the development and evaluation of their net zero strategy.
