Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) continues to be a major public health problem among children aged 6-59 months in Indonesia. According to the 2021 routine annual report from Ministry of Health (MOH), the two-dose coverage of Vitamin A Supplementation (VAS) was high (90%); however, the national Basic Health Research Survey (Riskesdas) in 2018 reported that 82.3% of children 6-59 months of age received at least one dose of VAS, and two-dose VAS coverage for children 6-59 months of age was 53.3%.
The national VAS integrated management guideline was revised in 2016 by MoH with support from Nutrition International (NI). This guideline had been printed and distributed by NI to nutrition officers at province, district and puskesmas level in NI provinces in 2019. However, there was restructuring staff and staff rotations in the Province Health Office (PHO), District Health Office (DHO), Puskesmas and also in MoH in 2021/2022 and MOH suggested to NI to conduct a workshop to re-orient the national VAS integrated management guideline and new MoH's drugs and supplements policy and mechanism to nutrition/health program officers and pharmacy officers at puskesmas, district level. The purpose to conduct orientation VAS integrated management guideline is to improve the capacity of nutrition/health program officers and pharmacy officers at puskesmas, district level on VAS program management and supply chain (micro-planning, strategy to reach unreached children such plan mop-up activities, budgeting, estimation of VAS stocks and streamlining the supply chain).
The quality assurance of Vitamin A capsule (VAC) along its supply chain is very important to maintain and assure quality of VAC which in turn determines the safety and efficacy of VAC for end users. Related to supply chain, in a meeting that facilitated by NI on 23 June 2022 which attended by MOH, PHO West Java and Banten and representatives from DHOs, the findings and recommendation based on the assessment of the quality assurance system of VAC that conducted in 2018 including the proposed revision to Standard of Procedures (e.g., SOP for receiving of VAC supplies, storage, inventory and distribution process at PHO, DHO and Puskesmas level) have been disseminated and the proposed revision to the SOPs was accepted by MOH.
To strengthen the capacity of nutrition and pharmacy officers on the VAS integrated management guideline and capacity of pharmacy officers on VAC supply chain management including to socialize revised VAC SOPs, a training on VAS integrated management and VAC supply chain management will be conducted in East Nusa Tenggara province. NI is seeking suitable agency to support Nutrition International to organize VAS program trainings.
