SNV Netherlands Development Organization
SNV is an international not-for-profit development organization established in 1965 in the Netherlands. By connecting our global expertise with a long-lasting in-country presence, we help realize locally owned solutions in more than 25 countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. SNV supports development actors' resourcefulness by developing local capacities, improving performance and services, strengthening governance systems, creating access for excluded groups, and making markets work for the poor. Our global team of advisors uses their expertise in Agriculture, Energy, and WASH to improve the health and livelihoods of millions of people, focusing on the poor and marginalized groups. Gender and climate change are cross-cutting issues underlying all our interventions. SNV works hand-in-hand with national and local government and civil society actors, cooperatives, and the private sector to ensure significant and lasting change.
BIPOSC Project
In Indonesia, smallholders manage more than 40% (4.2 million hectares) of all plantations, and independent smallholders own more than 3.1 million hectares of oil palm farmland. These independent smallholders receive limited support and risk exclusion from the (sustainable) markets as they cannot meet the demands. North Sumatra is one of Indonesia's central palm oil plantations, producing an average of 1.7 million tons of CPO Per year, reaching 8.23% of the total national production of CPO per year.
SNV is joining The Livelihoods Fund for Family Farming (L3F) and PT Musim Mas to launch an unprecedented 10-year project (Biodiverse and Inclusive Palm Oil Supply Chain – BIPOSC) to help 2,500 smallholder palm oil farmers achieve this transition in Sumatra Island, Indonesia. Brought by Mars Incorporated Danone and L'OrĂ©al as the investors, the project aims to build a transparent and deforestation-free supply chain thanks to locally adapted agroforestry models, regenerative agriculture, and biodiversity enhancement. The project will help regenerate 8,000 hectares of palm farms in degrading land areas while restoring additional 3,500 hectares of local biodiversity over 10 years.
