The Oxford University Clinical Research Unit in Indonesia (OUCRU Indonesia, formerly EOCRU) operates in partnership with the Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia. OUCRU Indonesia is part of the Major Overseas Programme in Viet Nam sponsored by the Wellcome Trust and governed by the Centre for Tropical Medicine and Global Health at the Nuffield Department of Medicine, University of Oxford, United Kingdom. OUCRU in Indonesia, Viet Nam and Nepal, along with their many local and international partners, conduct biomedical, clinical, and epidemiological research on infections affecting the health of people living in Southeast Asia and beyond.

Scope of Work

Through our partner Sumba Foundation, OUCRU Indonesian seeks a qualified and experienced Community Engagement & Social Science Research Officer for East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) to conduct community engagement and social science research activities in NTT. S/he will support multiple research projects, beginning with "Social Science and Public Engagement Action Research (SPEAR 4): Stigma and Infectious Diseases". This position will be responsible for leading community and public engagement activities around research and health and for implementing OUCRU's social research projects in the NTT region, particularly Sumba Island.


Responsibilities:

A. Community Engagement

  1. Identify and build relationships with communities related to research projects.
  2. Plan and implement appropriate engagement activities.
  3. Monitor and evaluate all activities.
  4. Be responsible for managing project finances and reporting according to Sumba Foundation and OUCRU Indonesia requirements.
  5. Regular reporting on projects, including end of project final reports (written in English).
  6. Contributing to Public & Community Engagement projects and activities of OUCRU Indonesia 

B. Social Sciences 

  1. Coordinate between the SPEAR research team and local stakeholders, including health offices, primary healthcare centres, community leaders and related local organizations. 
  2. Identify and compile lists of potential research participants in accordance with the study protocol. 
  3. Contact potential participants to introduce and explain study objectives and protocol, and to arrange data collection, either in person or by telephone. 
  4. Conduct data collection including surveys, interviews, digital diaries and focus group discussions. 
  5. Conduct data processing, coding and verification of data in accordance with the research protocol and coding procedures, and enters data into a computer database and/or spreadsheet application for subsequent analysis.  
  6. Assist the SPEAR research team in the fieldwork activities, particularly in translation process, and providing knowledge on local tradition/wisdom. 
  7. Prepare progress reports. 
  8. Travel to various sites within a specified geographical area, as appropriate to the objectives of the study. 

Job Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree (or higher) in medical, public health/epidemiology, nursing, or social sciences or related field.
  • Experience with qualitative data collection for research studies is essential, experience in qualitative data analysis would be advantageous.
  • Understanding of the NTT culture and languages, especially Sumba, would be advantageous.
  • Excellent spoken and written English and Bahasa Indonesia.
  • Attention to details and highly organized.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Motivated and enthusiastic with a strong passion for interdisciplinary and implementation research.
  • Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy, and yet be a team player.
  • Willingness to travel, interact with, and work in a range of settings.
  • Computer literacy and proficiency.
  • Skill in qualitative data management software (e.g. Nvivo, or equivalent).


Benefits:

The selected candidate will initially receive a 12 months' contract with a possibility to receive a contract extension. The remuneration package that includes annual leave, sick leave, THR (Religious Day Allowance), BPJS Kesehatan, and fully paid income tax and BPJS Ketenagakerjaan (JAMSOSTEK).

The successful candidate will work in a dynamic team of clinicians, academics, scientists and research support teams from diverse renowned, international centres.
