Background
The Blue Corridors for Turtles project aims to digitally map and assess turtle movement, coastal communities and geographically distributed threats. By leveraging traceability technologies (including ShellBank), the goal is to deepen our understanding of marine turtles' transboundary migrations, identify critical habitats (as important marine turtle areas), and pinpoint populations most at-risk and in need of protection.
Under the responsibility of WWF's Global Marine Turtle Conservation Lead (Project Manager for this project), the appointee will contribute to the Blue Corridors for Turtles project by data mining and mapping marine turtle nesting beaches, foraging grounds and migratory corridors (based on existing tracking data), identify critical knowledge gaps, and spatially assess both anthropological threats and habitat protection in order to create important marine turtle areas to support robust spatial management strategies based on science-based evidence
Objective
- Conduct data collation, assessment, validation & synthesis
- Digitize data layers, perform geospatial data analyses (biotelemetry/tracking data, genetic stock structure, threat mapping assessment)
- Lead critical habitat identification workshops to develop geospatial critical habitat areas (important marine turtle areas)
- Present research findings at national and international conferences
- Co-draft and submit manuscripts for publication
- Active participation in outreach and project communication facing both governments and communities
Requirements:
- A Ph.D. in Marine Geospatial Ecology or a closely related Geospatial Science discipline (or equivalent doctorate)
- Strong experience and skills in satellite telemetry data analysis
- Ability to compile and process large & multisource datasets
- Advanced scientific programming knowledge (R, Python, others)
- Background knowledge in marine biology & ecology (preferably marine turtles)
- Interest in megafauna conservation issues, strategies & policy frameworks
- Experience with multi partners programme coordination, meeting facilitation
- Excellent written and verbal communication abilities
