Indonesia Plastics Project Assistant
Based in Jakarta, Indonesia
The Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) works to protect our global climate, ocean, forests, wetlands, wildlife and defend the fundamental human right to a secure natural environment, recognising that all other rights are contingent on this. EJF works internationally to inform policy and drive systemic, durable reforms to protect our environment and defend human rights. We investigate and expose abuses and support environmental defenders, Indigenous peoples, communities, and independent journalists on the frontlines of environmental injustice. Our campaigns aim to secure peaceful, equitable and sustainable futures. Our investigators, researchers, filmmakers, and campaigners work with grassroots partners and environmental defenders across the globe.
EJF has worked in Indonesia since 2018 to end illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing and human rights abuses on fishing vessels, build journalist capacity to report on environmental crimes, combat ghost fishing gear with artisanal fishers, and actively promote improvements to policymaking, corporate governance, and management of fisheries.
EJF addresses plastic pollution through community-driven, scalable solutions like the Net Free Seas (NFS) project in Thailand, Indonesia, and Ghana, which tackles abandoned, lost, otherwise discarded fishing gear (ALDFG) while empowering communities to participate in the circular economy solutions. Our Bottle Free Seas (BFS) project in Bangkok has installed 10 refill stations and prevented over 2 million plastic bottles by promoting reuse systems and public sector engagement. EJF also contributes to Global Plastics Treaty negotiations, advocating for a legally binding treaty and opposing false solutions like bioplastics and waste-to-energy, promoting instead practical, just alternatives like NFS and BFS.
We are now seeking an Indonesia Plastics Project Assistant to join the team and help scale EJF's Plastics Campaign across Indonesia. The successful candidate will be involved in expanding the NFS project by engaging with local coastal communities and recycling facilities, advocating for real solutions to end plastic pollution, researching the reuse and refill landscape in Indonesia, and engaging in advocacy discussions with stakeholders.
