Whale Shark Conservation Science Officer

(Code: WSCS-O)

 

 

Saleh Bay, located in West Nusa Tenggara, is a critical habitat for the Indo-Pacific whale shark population. The area is known for frequent sightings of juvenile whale sharks, making it an important feeding and nursery ground. However, the growing popularity of whale shark tourism, combined with potential environmental threats such as overfishing, pollution, and habitat degradation, poses challenges to the long-term conservation of these majestic creatures. Recognizing the importance of preserving this unique marine ecosystem, Konservasi Indonesia, in collaboration with local communities, government agencies, and other stakeholders, has initiated the Whale Shark Conservation Initiative in Saleh Bay. This initiative aims to protect whale sharks through scientific research, sustainable tourism practices, community engagement, and policy advocacy, ensuring the species' survival while supporting local livelihoods.

 

To achieve this, the Whale Shark Conservation Science Officer will play a key role in driving conservation efforts by providing administrative, research, and programmatic support for project implementation. The officer will serve as the primary liaison with key stakeholders in West Nusa Tenggara, including the Department of Marine and Fisheries and the Department of Tourism, particularly on matters related to whale shark science and conservation. In addition, the officer will support Kawan Teluk Saleh, a youth community established in Saleh Bay, in conducting whale shark monitoring and conservation activities. This includes working closely with local communities, fishers, and tourism operators to promote sustainable whale shark tourism practices.

 

The officer will report directly to the Conservation Planning Manager in the Sunda Banda Ecoregion, with technical supervision from the Focal Species Science Coordinator to ensure high-quality and timely implementation of program activities according to the work plan. 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

       Act as primary liaison with the Department of Marine and Fisheries of West Nusa Tenggara Province, including the Marine Protected Area (MPA) management body in supporting the development and implementation of whale shark based-MPA, conservation and ecotourism initiative in Saleh Bay

       Conduct field surveys and monitoring activities, including photo ID, satellite and acoustic telemetry, and interviews with fishers and dive operators.

       Monitor and assess whale shark tourism activities to ensure sustainability and support the development of responsible tourism guidelines.

       Work together with local youth community and science team in Focal Species Conservation Program to establish community-based whale shark monitoring program.

       Organize training sessions to enhance local capacity in whale shark monitoring and conservation, including data collection techniques and tourism impact assessments.

       Perform database management, data analysis, and produce technical reports to support program evaluation and decision-making.

       Work closely with tourism operators, local operators, and local guides to promote and implement whale shark responsible tourism practice.

       Provide inputs and support the development of project in Saleh Bay.

       Support both technical and management aspects of marine protected area management and whale shark management in Saleh Bay.

       Promote our work through publicity activities, materials, and displays, including scientific publication/journal, online/printing article, book, events/expo, etc.

       Support the Project Coordinator in collecting M&E data for project implementation.

       Perform other duties as requested by the Supervisor to support Konservasi Indonesia's Marine Program portfolio.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

       Bachelor's degree or equivalent university degree in biology, marine science, or natural resource management.

       2 - 4 years of related work experience, preferably in conservation NGO.

       Possess a diving license, with rescue level certification preferred

       Good command of spoken and writing English and Bahasa. Good attention to detail and proofreading and research skills.

       Comfortable managing multiple duties and adapting to changing priorities.

       Service focus. courteous, tactful, and proven ability to work effectively with others.

       Ability to work under tight deadlines and often under difficult circumstances.

       Ability to function well in a multicultural, diverse, and fast-paced work team environment.

       Ability to work under general supervision and take initiative to solve problems under supervisor direction.

 

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

Stakeholders Engagement Coordinator

In 2022 Konservasi Indonesia (KI) and partners formally started a Jurisdictional Initiative (JI) to improve the shrimp aquaculture sector in Banyuwangi regency, East Java, Indonesia, building off a roadmap for improvement that was co-developed with local stakeholders and integrated with mangrove conservation which include preservation and restoration. Strong progress has been made against the roadmap whereas we are currently 3 years into a 5-year timeline for improvement.  Leverage Climate-Smart Shrimp (CSS) aquaculture as a nature-based solution also has starting as a pilot in Banyuwangi to help adapt the impacts of climate change and promote more sustainable and equitable food systems for climate-vulnerable communities through enhancing aquaculture governance.

 

Our Program in Banyuwangi need to shepherd engagements with stakeholders (government, non-government, academia, local community organisation partners) from national, provincial, district to field levels. The Stakeholders Engagement Coordinator will have a broad range of tasks such as the provision of mobilization and engagement of stakeholders and acquire information from primary or secondary sources to create meaningful inputs for program implementation. Moreover, the Coordinator will be responsible for coordination with relevant district offices and key stakeholders for the establishment, mobilization and acceleration of Task Force Gugus Tugas Pengembangan Budidaya Udang berwawasan Lingkungan. Additionally, the Coordinator will also assist the Banyuwangi Fisheries Office, District Development Agency, and other district government agencies in coordinating existing partnership on sustainable aquaculture practices, support on the incorporation of aquaculture improvement roadmap in the district government policy, planning and budget. S/he will ensure seamless communication and collaboration between KI and the Banyuwangi District Government to secure the success of program partnerships

 

KI is hiring Stakeholders Engagement Coordinator will be working directly under supervision of Fisheries and Aquaculture Program Manager and collaboratively working with the eco-region and national program team members in Konservasi Indonesia

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES


Administrative and Operational Coordination

       In coordination with KI' Operations team, support logistics arrangements (flights for experts to project sites, per diems, transport, office support facilities, and any support required for the organization of seminar/ workshops/ training)

       In coordination with KI' Finance team, manage administrative tasks including timesheets, invoices, and expenses in line with the procedures in the Project handbook.

       Review and oversee consultant documents (workplan, methodologies and reports) and lead internal coordination for feedbacks.

       Coordinate procurement of consultants, vendors, and services as per forum procurement policies.

 

Communication and Reporting

       In coordination with KI Communications team and NBCAP steering committee, develop communication materials of NBCAP including quarterly bulletin, social media, publications and outreach materials.

       Support and contribute to the preparation of quarterly update, reporting summaries, project narratives, and meeting minutes for internal and external audiences.

 

Partnership Management

       Maintain effective coordination and communication with program partners, including national and local stakeholders.

       Represent NBCAP in any relevant events and forums to foster partnerships and promote program objectives.

       Support the manager in building effective coordination and communication with steering committee, working group, and external collaborators.

 

General Support

       Work closely with KI's other Managers, advisors, and field team in regions to ensure alignment of activities with broader program objective.

       Assist in managing subcontractors and other non-KI project personnel.

       Perform related duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

       Bachelor's degree in marine, fisheries and other relevant fields with 5 years or more related experience. Advanced degree preferred.

       Direct project management experience preferably in Coastal Area conservation, mangrove restoration, sea grass conservation and restoration, climate change, other relevant topics

       Proven experience working in serving/managing multistakeholder forum

       Up to 5 years of professional experience managing teams.

       Demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships and partnerships across cultures and organizations.

       Ability to diagnose problems and identify solutions.

       Strong written communication skills. Proficient in written and spoken English preferred.

       Ability to work well under pressure, multitask, set priorities, and deliver quality results.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS

       This position will be based in Jakarta with Periodic travel to the project site and other relevant locations.

  1. Latar Belakang

NLR Indonesia adalah organisasi nirlaba non-pemerintah yang lebih dari 50 tahun bekerja untuk eliminasi penyakit kusta dan penghapusan stigma akibat kusta bersama dengan Kementerian Kesehatan Republik Indonesia. Secara konkrit NLR memberikan pendampingan teknis kepada tenaga kesehatan dalam kegiatan pencegahan penularan; mengembangkan inovasi berbasis bukti untuk upaya percepatan eliminasi kusta; pengorganisasian masyarakat; peningkatan kapasitas dan peningkatan kesadaran demi terciptanya Indonesia yang terbebas dari kusta.

 

NLR Indonesia memiliki visi terciptanya kehidupan dunia yang terbebas dari kusta dan segala konsekuensinya dengan melakukan pencegahan, deteksi dan pengobatan kusta serta memberikan dukungan terhadap kesehatan, kemampuan dan partisipasi penuh orang yang mengalami kusta di masyarakat.  Salah satu nilai NLR Indonesia adalah komunikatif, yang memandatkan penggunaan berbagai media untuk menyebarluaskan pesan-pesan yang mendukung terwujudnya visi NLR Indonesia. Pengelolaan pesan-pesan dalam media ini perlu dilakukan secara profesional sehingga semakin banyak pihak dapat dijangkau, digerakkan, dan dilibatkan dalam upaya mencapai zero leprosy dan penghapusan stigma dan diskriminasi akibat kusta di Indonesia.

 

Kebutuhan akan media terutama media sosial yang terkelola dengan baik menjadi sangat krusial untuk dipenuhi, mengingat ada kebutuhan untuk menyebarluaskan isu kusta dan konsekuensinya kepada publik seluas mungkin. Oleh karena itu, NLR Indonesia membutuhkan pemagang yang dapat membantu proses pengelolaan media sosial, pengelolaan dokumen pembelajaran, dan media KIE yang sudah dimiliki NLR Indonesia.

 

NLR Indonesia telah memiliki tim komunikasi di organisasi namun kami memutuskan untuk memberi kesempatan bagi para pemagang untuk berkontribusi, mendapatkan pengalaman dan mengenal kerja-kerja NLR Indonesia dengan lebih baik dengan harapan minat dan perhatian pemagang pada isu kusta dan konsekuensinya di Indonesia akan bertumbuh pula.

 

Para pemagang ini akan melakukan tugasnya dalam koordinasi dan supervisi oleh Communication Coordinator.

 

  1. Tujuan

Kegiatan pemagangan ini memiliki tujuan:

  1. Memberikan kesempatan bagi pemagang untuk belajar dan menerapkan keterampilan dan ilmu dalam hal pengelolaan media sosial dan pendokumentasian materi media di NLR Indonesia.  Selain itu, pemagang akan mendapat kesempatan untuk mengenal lebih dalam tentang isu kusta dan konsekuensinya secara langsung dari NLR Indonesia.
  2. Melakukan updating dan response di media sosial dan website NLR Indonesia
  3. Melakukan pengelolaan dokumentasi video, foto, artikel, link liputan media yang telah terkumpul dalam kurun waktu 3 tahun terakhir.

Kegiatan ini akan melibatkan pemagang di kantor NLR, yang dibuktikan dengan:

Kegiatan pengarsipan juga membutuhkan keterampilan pengarsipan dokumen-dokumen yang mudah diakses.

 

  1. Metodologi

Kegiatan pemagangan ini menggunakan metode pendampingan langsung dimana pemagang melakukan tugas-tugas yang diberikan selama periode tersebut. Pendampingan langsung berupa on the job training dan mentoring serta konsultasi. Pemagang diharapkan dapat sekaligus meningkatkan keterampilan mereka selama pemagangan ini, mencakup keterampilan teknis dan keterampilan non-teknis lainnya seperti manajemen, komunikasi, team work, planning dan target setting.

Policy Advisor

A.  Tasks & Responsibilities 
  • Advise and support the political partner MEMR on the development of policies and improving the regulatory framework for renewable energy, energy efficiency, just transition and/or carbon market.
  • Design and implement technical and strategic advisory and capacity development activities tailored to the demand of the political partner(s) and with the aim to accelerate the Indonesian energy transition.
  • Monitor and analyze current and new relevant legislation and regulations in Indonesia and globally as well as their impact as basis for the advisory work.
  • Conceptualization, design, preparation, organization, facilitation and documentation of events, workshops and conferences
  • Conceptualization of Terms of Reference for the procurement of external consultants and subsequent steering of external international and local consultants
  • Write, revise and review reports, brochures, policy briefs and recommendations for in and external audiences, and other documents ensuring high quality outputs.
  • Act as knowledge expert on selected policy topics, present results to high-level government representatives (Indonesian and German) and other relevant stakeholders in various formats.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with the political partner and other relevant public and private sector stakeholders.
  • Contribute from your field of expertise to the GIZ portfolio development, including the participation in the preparation of new project concepts.
