BIPOSC Project
In the past few years, the palm oil industry has attracted the world because of its rapid development and a number of social and economic issues, particularly on the environmental impact of deforestation and biodiversity losses. On the other hand, the global demand for palm oil will continue growing in the coming decades. In response to rising international pressure and consumer concerns, many palm oil companies make public commitments to reduce or eliminate deforestation in their supply chains.
In Indonesia, smallholders manage more than 40% (4.2 million hectares) of all plantations, and independent smallholders own more than 3.1 million hectares of oil palm farmland. These independent smallholders receive limited support and risk exclusion from the (sustainable) markets as they cannot meet the demands. North Sumatra is one of Indonesia's central palm oil plantations, producing an average of 1.7 million tons of CPO Per year, reaching 8.23% of the total national production of CPO per year.
SNV is joining The Livelihoods Fund for Family Farming (L3F) and PT Musim Mas to launch an unprecedented 10-year project (Biodiverse and Inclusive Palm Oil Supply Chain – BIPOSC) to help 2,500 smallholder palm oil farmers achieve this transition in Sumatra Island, Indonesia. Brought by Mars Incorporated Danone and L'Oréal as the investors, the project aims to build a transparent and deforestation-free supply chain thanks to locally adapted agroforestry models, regenerative agriculture, and biodiversity enhancement. The project will help regenerate 8,000 hectares of palm farms in degrading land areas while restoring an additional 3,500 hectares of local biodiversity over 10 years.
Fertilizers for Agroforestry Demonstration Plots
Agroforestry is a key component of the BIPOSC Project. In the first implementation phase, 20 hectares of demonstration plots and 7 nurseries were established and maintained. These demonstration plots serve as learning sites for farmers and are also used for Farmer Field Schools.
To sustain the productivity and health of these demonstration plots and nurseries, fertilizer applications must be conducted precisely, ensuring the correct dosage, timing, location, and type of fertiliser. This approach is critical to achieving optimal yield and plant health.
In that regard, procuring both organic and chemical fertilizers is essential. These fertilizers will be applied gradually and systematically across the respective plots and nurseries. For the total of 20 hectares of demonstration plots from August 2024 to August 2025, the fertilizers required are listed below.
- Urea: 189 Saks (per Sak is 50 Kg)
- Rock phosphate: 69 Saks (per Sak is 50 Kg)
- TSP: 2 Saks (per Sak is 50 Kg)
- NPK: 20 Saks (per Sak is 50 Kg)
- MOP: 121 Saks (per Sak is 50 Kg)
- Dolomite: 119 Saks (per Sak is 50 Kg)
- Borax: 169 Kg.
- Organic Fertilisers: 1446 Saks (per Sak in 50 Kg)
The specification of the fertilisers is:
- Urea Fertilizer: Active Ingredient: Urea (CO(NH₂)₂) Nitrogen Content: Typically around 46% N. Packed in bags with contents of 50 kg.
- Rock phosphate is essential for plants as it helps in the formation of roots and stems. This fertilizer contains natural phosphate (P₂O₅) at a level of 26-27%. Packed in bags with contents of 50 Kg.
- TSP Fertilizer: Active Ingredient: Triple Superphosphate (TSP), Chemical Formula: Ca(H₂PO₄)₂, Phosphorus Content: Typically around 46-48% P₂O₅ (as a percentage of the total weight) Physical Characteristics, Form: Solid (granules). Appearance: White to greyish granules or powder. Density: Approximately 1.0-1.2 g/cm³ for granules. Solubility in Water: High solubility in water, Packed in bags with contents of 50 kg.
- NPK 16:16:16 fertilizer: 16% N (Nitrogen), 16% P2O5 (Phospate), 16% K2O (Kalium), 0.5% MgO (Magnesium), dan 6% CaO (Kalsium), Packed in bags with contents of 50 kg.
- MOP Fertilizer: Factory Packaged 50 kg Bag , Content: K₂O 60% Form: Red granules
- Dolomit: Content: CaCO₃ 80%, Form: Fine white powder, Packed in bags with contents of 50 kg.
- Borax: BORAX PENTAHYDRATE TURKEY ETIMADEN ETIBOR-48 GRANULAR 99,9%. Packed in bags with Golden Buffalo contents of 50 kg.
- Organic fertilizer: - The fertilizer is odourless and does not contain chemicals, Fertilizers are made from animal manure and other organic materials, improve structure & fertilize soil, makes plant leaves greener and fresher, accelerate flowering, Speed up fertilization, Substitute for chemical fertilizers. Packed in bags with contents of 50 Kg.
