About Luminocean

Luminocean is an Indonesian marine conservation NGO. We work at the intersection of marine science, community work, waste management, and education, designing and delivering programs that protect ocean ecosystems while building local capacity through education, volunteer engagement, and hands-on conservation initiatives.

We are looking for a high-ownership marine biology professional who can independently coordinate projects and lead a team of junior marine scientists on the ground.


The Role

We are seeking an Indonesian marine biology graduate (at least MSc degree) who is ready to take responsibility for coordinating a team that is working on a variety of research projects and for training the team in data management and academic skills. This role is not entry-level. You will be trusted to plan, coordinate, supervise, and disseminate marine conservation research projects with minimal supervision.

You will:

  • Lead a team to conduct marine conservation projects,

  • Coordinate permit acquisition, field activities, timelines, logistics, and reporting,

  • Supervise and mentor volunteers, interns, and junior team members,

  • Build a strong, collaborative team culture on site, and

  • Maintain and grow our network of government authorities, scientists, private stakeholders and local communities.


Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate principal investigators in managing their assigned marine research projects.

  • Organize weekly work plans, schedules, and task allocation.

  • Supervise training and briefings for volunteers and interns.

  • Ensure permit acquisition, data collection, documentation, and reporting are completed properly.

  • Uphold Luminocean's values of professionalism, environmental protection, safety, and community respect.

Requirements

Must have:

  • Indonesian citizen.

  • Master's degree in Marine Biology, Marine Science, or a related field.

  • Proven experience conducting marine or environmental projects in the field.

  • Experience in publishing scientific papers in international journals.

  • Strong leadership and organizational skills.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal guidance.

  • Confidence in leading teams and making on-the-ground decisions.

  • Experience working with volunteers, interns, or community groups.

  • Strong communication skills in Bahasa Indonesia and English.

  • Good writing skills in Bahasa Indonesia and English.

Preferred (but not mandatory):

  • Experience in coral reef projects.

  • Experience in facilitating workshops or training sessions.

  • Familiarity with basic monitoring or survey methods.

Contract Details

Contract Type:
• Temporary (12 months, renewable).

 • Full time at the Banda Islands (remote work not possible).
• Accommodation and lunch provided.

 • 2 x Return tickets from other parts of Indonesia to Banda Naira/year.
